Here's what the green seal on our bottle actually means.
Our Original formula is EWG VERIFIED®. That's a mark the Environmental Working Group only lets a formula carry after it meets the group's criteria, and you don't have to take our word for what those are.
EWG VERIFIED® means this product avoids EWG's ingredients of concern, is committed to full transparency and operates under good manufacturing practices.
Original formula
First, who's doing the checking.
The Environmental Working Group is a non-profit that has run Skin Deep®, its online guide to the ingredients in personal care products, since 2004. EWG VERIFIED® is its certification program, and it's a separate, stricter step.
“When consumers see the mark on a product, they know that it is free from EWG's ingredients of concern and meets our strictest criteria for transparency and ingredient safety.”EWG, EWG VERIFIED® FAQ
An educational rating of a product based on its ingredient list. Anyone can look a product up.
Goes beyond the label: the company submits extra ingredient information and has to meet product- and company-level criteria.
The seal stands for three promises, in EWG's own words.
Avoids EWG's ingredients of concern
- Avoids ingredients that authoritative health bodies have flagged for potential health concern
- Is free of contaminants
Full transparency
- Labeling that fully discloses every ingredient
- The full ingredient list on the company's website too, which is why it's on this page
Backed by science
- Uses adequate preservatives
- Made by a manufacturer that follows good manufacturing practices
- Every ingredient goes inThe company submits the full formula, plus ingredient information that goes beyond what's printed on the label.
- EWG screens itThe formula is checked against EWG's lists of unacceptable and restricted ingredients.
- Restrictions get proofFor any restricted ingredient, EWG asks for documents such as a certificate of analysis or a lab report.
- It stays checkedEWG reviews its lists every year, can test products carrying the mark at any time, and a changed formula has to be resubmitted.

8ingredients, that's allEight ingredients, and that's the whole bottle.
Here's every one of them, the name you'll see on the label, and the job it does.
- 1WaterWaterThe base of the gel.
- 2Witch hazel extractHamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) ExtractThe botanical doing the cleanup work. Ours is alcohol-free, so it calms and soothes irritated skin as it cleans instead of stinging it.
- 3HydroxyethylcelluloseHydroxyethylcelluloseTurns the water into a clear gel that sits on top of the paper instead of soaking in.
- 4Vitamin B5Panthenol (Vitamin B5)A moisturizer that draws in water and holds it, so skin stays soft and comfortable after you wipe. It's the same gentle moisturizer you'll find in baby lotions.
- 5Green tea leaf extractCamellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf ExtractAn antioxidant from the tea plant that helps protect skin while you clean up.
- 6PropanediolPropanediolA hydration helper that keeps moisture in the gel and against your skin, so the wipe feels soothing rather than drying.
- 7GluconolactoneGluconolactoneA gentle preservative.
- 8Sodium benzoateSodium BenzoateA preservative that keeps the bottle fresh.
Two of the eight are preservatives on purpose. A water-based gel needs them, and "uses adequate preservatives" is one of EWG's own criteria. No fragrance, ever.
fragrance-free on purpose
EWG verifies one formula at a time, so here's exactly where the seal applies.

Original
The eight ingredients above. Witch hazel, vitamin B5 and green tea extract, for butts of all sizes and ages.

Baby & Kids
The Original plus squalane, a super-pure moisturizer, for kids with sensitive skin.

Feminine
The Original plus squalane and centella, pH-balanced to 3.5–4.5. It's a separate formula, and its EWG review is in progress.
And here's what the seal doesn't mean.
